YouGlish is useful as a source of spoken examples, and Tandem centres on human exchange. They should not be presented as the same kind of AI tutor as Speak or Loora.
For pronunciation: use feedback on one feature
ELSA describes speech-recognition feedback on pronunciation and fluency. Use a short activity to identify a feature to work on, such as a final consonant or word stress, then test that feature in a fresh sentence.
An app’s number is feedback within that system, not automatically an official language score. A speech recogniser may also misunderstand because of background noise or recording quality, so listen to your own recording before accepting every correction.
YouGlish can supply additional listening examples. Compare several speakers and aim for intelligible speech, rather than assuming there is only one acceptable accent.
For conversation: practise responding, not reciting
ChatGPT Voice and Gemini Live provide general-purpose spoken interaction. You can use that interaction for language practice, but a general assistant’s encouraging reply is not a validated assessment of pronunciation or proficiency.
OpenAI’s current documentation describes ChatGPT Voice on desktop and notes that access depends on plan, rollout, and workspace settings. Avoid relying on an old claim that voice is available only on mobile or on a specific historical model plan.
Speak, Praktika, Loora, and SpeakPal present more language-focused tutor experiences. Compare how each handles correction, repetition, and open conversation in the version you can actually access.
A five-minute practice situation
Practise changing a restaurant reservation. Explain the original booking, ask for a different time, and respond if the first alternative is unavailable.
Learner: I have a reservation for two at seven, but could we move it to eight?
Partner: Eight is fully booked. Would half past eight work?
Learner: Yes, that’s fine. Could you confirm that the booking is still for two people?
Afterwards, repeat the situation with a different time and number of guests. This checks whether you can use the pattern rather than only remember the original exchange.
Understand what Speak is
Speak is a separate language-learning product with an OpenAI partnership and investment relationship described on its own website. Calling it “Speak by OpenAI” can mislead readers about the product’s identity.
Speak currently describes a trial followed by paid plans, with pricing varying by region and offer. Check the in-app subscription terms and which tutor features belong to the selected plan before making a purchase.
For listening-supported speaking
FluentU presents authentic video learning with interactive captions and also advertises an AI tutor. The available language, video, and tutor features should be checked for the specific subscription you are considering.
Use a short clip to collect one useful phrase, explain what the speaker means, and produce a new example aloud. Watching many clips without speaking gives you less evidence about your ability to use the language yourself.
For real interaction with another person
Tandem supports text, voice notes, and audio or video calls between language partners. Agree on the language balance, topic, and correction style so that both people know what kind of exchange they are joining.
Human conversation adds unexpected meanings, accents, and communication choices. A partner is not necessarily a trained teacher, so ask for clarification when feedback seems inconsistent and check doubtful grammar in a reliable reference.
Check access before choosing
Use a trial or limited session to test the exact activity you care about. Confirm the renewal price, cancellation terms, supported device, microphone quality, and whether useful feedback is included in the chosen plan.
Save a short baseline recording and return to a comparable task later. Look for clearer explanations, fewer communication breakdowns, and better responses to follow-up questions, rather than treating a longer streak as proof of improvement.
