English learning apps use tests for different jobs. A placement test chooses a starting lesson. A unit quiz checks recent material. A progress test samples retention. A proficiency test estimates broader ability. Understanding the job of the score prevents you from treating an in-app level as a universally accepted qualification.

Examples of current approaches
Busuu’s English placement test is designed to place learners within its course and currently describes adaptive questions across areas including vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening. This makes the result useful for selecting Busuu content. It does not automatically make the score suitable for an external application.
Duolingo uses course progress, review and challenge features, with availability varying by course and account. Do not confuse those learning features with the separately operated Duolingo English Test, which has its own rules, fees and institutional recognition.
Other course apps may offer level checks, certificates of completion or mastery scores. Features change. Read the provider’s current test description and ask which skills are actually sampled.
How to judge a placement result
A five-minute adaptive test may place you efficiently because the algorithm changes question difficulty. Its precision still depends on the number and type of responses. If speaking and extended writing are absent, the result should not be interpreted as a complete four-skill profile.
Try several lessons around the suggested point. If you understand everything and make no meaningful errors, move forward. If instructions and examples are consistently inaccessible, step back. Placement is a practical decision, not a permanent identity.
Course mastery is not general proficiency
An app quiz often reuses words and structures from recent lessons. A high score shows successful learning within that sequence. To test transfer, complete an unseen task on a new topic without hints. Use the same language in a message, conversation or summary.
For example, after a unit on travel, do not only repeat booking phrases from flashcards. Role-play a delayed flight, ask for alternatives and explain your final decision.
Compare apps by feedback, not points
Useful feedback identifies the error and supports another attempt. A red mark without explanation may encourage guessing. Check whether the app revisits difficult items, accepts more than one valid response and explains differences in meaning or register.
Points, leagues and streaks can support habit, but they are not a common measurement scale. Ten thousand points in one course cannot be converted into a CEFR level without documented evidence.
When to use an independent test
Use an assessment outside the course when you want to check transfer or compare progress over time. The Global English Test provides a separate online estimate. Cambridge English and the British Council also offer free level checks, while EF SET provides several test options with different skill coverage.
For university, employment, licensing or immigration, follow the receiving organization’s accepted-test rules. An app certificate may document learning without satisfying a formal evidence requirement.
Protect your data and your time
Placement systems may collect responses, device information and voice data. Review privacy and deletion controls before submitting sensitive speech or text. Avoid uploading employer documents or personal records into open practice.
Retest only after enough learning has occurred. Repeating the same placement questions can raise familiarity rather than proficiency. Keep one writing sample and one recording alongside the app score so that progress remains visible in real communication.
