Choose a communication goal
“Lose my accent” is neither necessary nor measurable. Choose a specific outcome: make final consonants easier to hear, place stress correctly in job-related terms, distinguish two vowels or use contrastive stress in explanations.
Different accents are a normal part of English. The practical target is speech that listeners can understand without unreasonable effort, plus the flexibility to understand other speakers.
A pronunciation practice cycle
Listen to a short model and mark the stressed syllable or words. Record your first attempt without slowing unnaturally. Compare the recording with the model and select one difference. Practise that feature in a few varied sentences, then record the original again.
Work on one feature at a time. If you change every vowel, consonant and stress pattern simultaneously, you will not know which change improved clarity.
Example: word stress
Take the word photography. Mark the main stress: pho-TOG-ra-phy. Put it in several sentences: “I’m studying photography,” “The photography course starts Monday,” and “Her photography has improved.” The surrounding rhythm changes, but the word’s main stress remains.
Use human intelligibility checks
After app practice, send a short recording to a teacher or trusted listener without showing the script. Ask them to write what they heard and identify any section that required extra effort. This tests communication more directly than a similarity percentage.
If listeners understand you but the app repeatedly rejects one acceptable regional pronunciation, do not chase the score automatically. Compare several reputable dictionary recordings and decide which model suits your context.
Practise rhythm, not only sounds
English listeners use stressed words to follow meaning. Compare “I ordered the BLUE one” with “I ORDERED the blue one.” The first corrects the color; the second corrects the action. An app that works only at word level cannot teach this contrast fully.
Shadowing can help. Listen to one sentence, pause, imitate its grouping and stress, then explain the same idea in your own words. Copying alone may improve imitation, while the final paraphrase tests flexible speech.
Privacy and access
Voice recordings may be personal data. Review whether the provider stores recordings, uses them to improve models and allows deletion. Avoid reading confidential work or identity information into practice tools.
