Free English practice tests serve different purposes. Some estimate a level, some introduce an exam format, and some provide a certificate from the test provider. Choosing by purpose prevents a common mistake: treating every online score as interchangeable.
What's your English level?
Take the test and get your certificate!
Choose the type of test first
| Purpose | Suitable test type | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Find a study starting point | Placement or level test | May cover only selected skills |
| Prepare for a named exam | Official sample test | Practice result is not an official score |
| Diagnose one skill | Listening, reading, grammar or speaking task | Cannot represent general proficiency alone |
| Document ability | A test accepted for your specific purpose | Recognition depends on the receiving organization |

Cambridge Test Your English is a quick way to explore a possible level and suitable Cambridge exam. Cambridge describes it as an indication, not a replacement for an official qualification.
The British Council English Online level test provides a short CEFR-aligned check. Review the page’s current sign-in and data requirements before starting.
EF SET offers free test options and provider-issued certificates. Test length and skills differ by version, so read the current description instead of assuming that every EF SET result covers the same abilities.
The Global English Test provides another online estimate with a direct path to level-based feedback. As with any online assessment, interpret the result according to the tested skills and intended use.
Use official sample materials for exam preparation
If you are preparing for Cambridge B2 First, IELTS, TOEFL or another named exam, begin with sample tasks from the exam owner. Third-party questions can add practice, but official material is the best reference for instructions, timing and task design.
Do not complete every sample immediately. Use one as a baseline, study the weaknesses it reveals, then save another unseen form for later. Repeating the same questions mainly measures memory.
Take the test under honest conditions
Follow the stated time, use headphones when required and remove translation tools. Record interruptions, replay limits and any technical problem. A score earned with captions or repeated audio is not comparable to a score earned under the intended conditions.
Mark guesses. After scoring, separate a knowledge gap from a test-taking error. Misreading NOT in a question needs a different solution from misunderstanding the passage.
Turn results into a study decision
Group errors by skill and cause. Suppose a listening test shows six mistakes: three missed numbers, two misunderstood opinions and one unknown word. “Practise listening” is too broad. A better plan includes short number dictations and exercises that contrast agreement, doubt and criticism.
Set a transfer task outside the test. After studying opinion language, listen to a new discussion and explain each speaker’s position. After reviewing relative clauses, use them in a description. Improvement should appear in fresh communication, not only in familiar question types.
When a free result is not enough
A university, employer, licensing body or immigration authority may specify an exam, version, score and validity period. Check the organization’s official requirements before booking or submitting anything. A downloadable badge can be useful for personal goals while still being unacceptable for a regulated application.
Likewise, a test without supervised identity checks cannot prove who completed it. That does not make the test useless; it means the evidence suits placement and practice better than high-stakes verification.
A simple testing calendar
Take one broad baseline, then spend four to eight weeks on specific weaknesses. Use short skill checks during the study period. Finish with an unseen test of comparable scope. Keep the test name, version, conditions and skill breakdown so that the comparison remains meaningful.
A good practice test gives you a decision, not just a number. Choose the next material, change a weak routine or confirm readiness for a more formal assessment.
