English Tests for University Applications: How to Choose the Right One

The right English test for a university application is the one accepted for your course, intake, and circumstances. Start with the university’s official requirement, then compare the eligible options.

A test’s international popularity does not establish acceptance for every programme. Minimum overall scores, section scores, delivery modes, and document deadlines can differ within the same institution.

Compare the main test options

These are options to investigate, not a universal approved list. Some institutions accept additional tests or other evidence, while particular programmes may set narrower requirements.

Check the complete requirement

Find the page for your course or the university’s stated language category. Record the accepted test, overall minimum, minimum for each skill, date restrictions, and deadline for supplying evidence.

Also check whether the delivery mode is accepted. A university’s acceptance of a test brand does not necessarily mean that every home, online, centre-based, or alternative version is accepted under every policy.

Overall scores do not override section minimums

Consider this fictional requirement: an overall score of 6.5 with no component below 6.0. An applicant with an overall 7.0 and a writing score of 5.5 would not meet that stated component condition.

This example explains how to read a requirement; it is not a recommendation for any university. Use the actual numbers on your course’s current official page and ask admissions if the wording is unclear.

Be careful with changing score scales

TOEFL iBT score reports changed to a 1–6 scale from 21 January 2026. ETS explains that a comparable 0–120 overall result is also supplied during the transition; consult its official score guide when reading your report.

If a university still publishes a requirement using the earlier scale, use the university’s guidance and the information provided in the official report. Do not invent a linear conversion by multiplying or dividing scores.

Choose among the accepted options

Once acceptance is clear, compare the task format, available test dates, location or device requirements, reporting time, and total cost. Use an official sample to see how the tasks feel before paying for a preparation course.

A computer-delivered format may suit one applicant, while another may prefer a different speaking or writing arrangement. Familiarity can matter, but it should be considered only among the options that satisfy the application requirement.

Prepare for the weakest required skill

If a practice result is close to the overall threshold but writing falls below the required component minimum, focus on writing tasks and feedback. Repeating your strongest reading tasks may raise confidence without resolving the condition that blocks the application.

Use the exact test’s official preparation materials. IELTS Academic and General Training share some components but differ in Reading and Writing, so the version matters when choosing practice.

Check exemptions and alternative routes directly

Some universities consider previous education, other qualifications, or preparatory courses under stated conditions. Read the relevant policy rather than assuming that studying in English automatically grants an exemption.

If you seek clarification, give admissions the course, intake, qualification or test version, result date, and question. A precise request is easier to answer than asking whether your English is “good enough.”

Save the official requirement link, the date you checked it, your test booking details, and any written clarification from admissions. Recheck the requirement before booking and before submitting the result.
