NDA English Quiz Practice: Format, Questions, and Explanations

by | Aug 15, 2025 | English Test Preparation

English preparation for the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy examination should begin with the UPSC syllabus and actual previous papers. Short quizzes can help you practise particular skills, but they do not represent the whole examination. Use them to discover why an answer is correct and what you need to review.

This guide explains where English fits into the written examination and provides eight original practice questions. They are learning exercises, not questions reproduced from UPSC or a prediction of a future paper.

Where English Fits into the NDA Examination

The UPSC NDA and NA Examination (II), 2026 notification sets out the written scheme and syllabus. English is Part A of the General Ability Test, rather than a separate four-skill English proficiency examination. Check the notification for your own examination session before applying or preparing.

Written paper or part Maximum marks Time allowed
Mathematics 300 2½ hours
General Ability Test, including Parts A and B 600 2½ hours for the complete paper
English, Part A of the General Ability Test 200 Within the General Ability Test’s time

The English syllabus covers grammar and usage, word knowledge, comprehension, and connections within longer texts. The written papers use objective questions. The notification also specifies a penalty of one third of the marks assigned to a question for a wrong answer; an unanswered question has no penalty.

This is not a deduction of a fixed one-third mark regardless of the question’s value. Read the current instructions carefully, including the rules for recording answers. English quiz practice also does not replace preparation for the other written subjects or the later selection stages.

How to Use a Short Quiz

Attempt the questions before reading the explanations. For each one, note whether your choice was confident, uncertain, or a guess. A correct answer that you cannot explain still deserves review.

Do not treat a score out of eight as an NDA readiness measure or a CEFR level. This small set samples a few useful language points and has not been calibrated as an examination. Use UPSC’s previous question papers to examine authentic tasks and practise complete papers under their stated conditions.

Eight Original Practice Questions

Questions 1–4: Grammar and Meaning

Choose the best answer for each sentence. Read the complete sentence before deciding, since the surrounding words can determine the correct form.

  1. Neither of the two answers ___ correct. A) are B) is C) were D) have
  2. By the time the bus arrived, we ___ for forty minutes. A) wait B) are waiting C) had been waiting D) will wait
  3. The instructions were concise. Which word is closest in meaning to concise? A) brief B) confused C) secret D) inaccurate
  4. She carried an umbrella ___ it did not rain. A) because B) although C) unless D) so that

Questions 5–6: Usage and Organisation

For question 5, choose the corrected sentence. For question 6, choose the order that produces the clearest short sequence.

  1. Correct “He suggested to leave early.” A) He suggested leave early. B) He suggested leaving early. C) He suggested left early. D) He suggested to leaving early.
  2. Put these sentences in order: P: Finally, submit the completed form. Q: First, read the instructions carefully. R: Then, enter the requested information. A) P–Q–R B) R–P–Q C) Q–R–P D) Q–P–R

Questions 7–8: Reading Comprehension

Read the short passage, then answer both questions. Base your answers on what the writer actually says.

The town library introduced evening opening hours for a trial period. Staff expected students to use the extra hours most, but working adults formed the largest group of visitors. The library will continue the trial for another month before deciding whether to change its permanent timetable.

  1. Which group used the extra hours most? A) Library staff B) Working adults C) School teachers D) Students
  2. What has the library decided? A) To close in the evening permanently B) To make the new hours permanent immediately C) To extend the trial before a final decision D) To admit only working adults in the evening

Answers and Explanations

Question Answer Explanation
1 B: is In this formal sentence, neither takes singular agreement. The plural noun inside of the two answers does not determine the verb.
2 C: had been waiting The waiting continued for a period before another event in the past.
3 A: brief Concise describes something expressed briefly without unnecessary detail. It does not mean inaccurate.
4 B: although The sentence contrasts carrying an umbrella with the absence of rain.
5 B Suggest can be followed by an -ing form: suggested leaving.
6 C: Q–R–P First, then, and finally establish the sequence.
7 B Working adults were the largest group; students were only the staff’s original expectation.
8 C Continuing the trial is different from making the timetable permanent.

Question 1 concerns the formal agreement choice expected in this exercise. Informal English sometimes uses plural agreement after neither of, so avoid turning the answer into a claim about every context. In question 7, notice how the passage contrasts an expectation with what actually happened.

Turn Your Result into Focused Preparation

Group errors by their cause. A tense error calls for work on time relationships, while an incorrect reading answer may show that you confused an expectation with a fact. Record the distinction and complete a new example before moving on.

For sentence-order questions, look for logical relationships as well as obvious sequencing words. References such as this decision or these findings need something earlier to refer to. For unfamiliar words, check the intended meaning in context instead of selecting the first familiar-looking alternative.

Use a short quiz to practise accuracy and explain choices, then use official papers to work on format and pacing. Keep the current UPSC notification as the authority for examination rules. Your review should leave you with a concrete next task, not just a total number of correct answers.
