An English certificate can support a job application when an employer needs independent evidence of language ability. The best test is not simply the most famous one. It is the test your employer, regulator, visa authority, or professional body accepts for the exact purpose you have in mind.

How to Choose an English Certificate for Work
Before paying for an exam, ask the receiving organisation five questions. Requirements differ even when two employers operate in the same country or industry.
- Does the organisation accept this exact test and test version?
- Does it require all four skills, or only a general level estimate?
- What minimum overall and section scores are required?
- How recent must the result be?
- Must the score be sent or verified through the test provider’s official system?

1. IELTS
IELTS is used by educational institutions, employers, professional associations, and governments. It reports separate scores for listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Use the official IELTS organisation search and verify whether the recipient wants Academic, General Training, IELTS for UKVI, or another approved version. Recognition alone does not tell you the minimum score.
2. TOEFL iBT
TOEFL iBT measures reading, listening, speaking, and writing in academic contexts. Tests taken from 21 January 2026 use a 1 to 6 score scale in half-point increments. During the transition through January 2028, official reports also provide a comparable overall result on the earlier 0 to 120 scale. Institutions are updating requirements at different times, so consult the current ETS score guidance and contact the recipient directly.
3. Cambridge English Qualifications
Cambridge English offers level-specific qualifications such as B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced, and C2 Proficiency. Results and certificates are valid indefinitely, but a university, employer, regulator, or visa authority may accept only evidence obtained within a certain period. Cambridge advises candidates to check the receiving organisation’s own policy. See the official certificate validity guidance.
4. CELPIP
CELPIP-General assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking in everyday, workplace, and community contexts. It is closely associated with Canadian immigration routes, but eligibility rules can change and differ by programme. The provider states that CELPIP scores are valid for two years. Confirm the current rule with both the CELPIP provider and the government or professional body receiving the result.
5. Global English Test
The Global English Test offers an online way to check English level and obtain a result that can be added to a CV or professional profile. It may be useful when an employer wants general evidence and does not mandate a named exam. For regulated immigration, licensing, or admissions decisions, use the specific test listed by the authority and confirm acceptance before relying on any certificate.
6. PTE Academic
PTE Academic is a computer-based test of speaking, writing, reading, and listening used for academic and other approved purposes. Pearson states that its score report is valid for two years, although receiving organisations may set their own policies. Check the current PTE Academic information, available test modes, and the organisation’s exact score requirement.
7. Duolingo English Test
The Duolingo English Test is delivered online and is used mainly by institutions that explicitly list it as an accepted option. A result accepted for one academic programme is not automatically valid for a job, professional licence, or visa. Search the provider’s current institution list and then confirm the individual programme requirement.
8. Michigan English Test
The Michigan English Test is a multilevel digital exam for educational, professional, personal, and certain approved immigration purposes. A four-skill version assesses writing, listening, reading, and speaking, while a two-skill option covers listening and reading. Michigan Language Assessment notes that many recognising organisations require all four skills. Check the official MET page and the recipient’s policy.
9. OET
OET is designed for healthcare professionals and uses healthcare scenarios to assess English communication. Acceptance depends on the profession, regulator, country, test mode, and required grade. A nurse, doctor, pharmacist, or other professional should start with the receiving regulator’s current rules and compare them with the official OET test information.
10. Trinity ISE
Trinity’s Integrated Skills in English qualifications assess reading, writing, speaking, and listening at different levels. They can be relevant to education, employment, and approved visa contexts, depending on the receiving organisation. Confirm the required level and approved delivery route on the official Trinity ISE page.
Validity and Acceptance Are Different
A certificate may remain technically valid while an employer accepts only recent evidence. TOEFL, PTE Academic, and CELPIP generally use two-year score validity periods. Cambridge certificates do not expire, but recipients can still impose recency rules. Read our guide to English certificate validity, then confirm the policy directly with the organisation making the decision.
How to List an English Certificate on a CV
- Write the full test or qualification name.
- Add the overall score and important section scores when relevant.
- Include the test date or award date.
- Name the CEFR level only when the provider officially reports or maps it.
- Add a verification link or credential ID if the provider offers one and sharing it is appropriate.
- Do not write “fluent” solely because you passed a short online quiz.
For example: Cambridge C1 Advanced, Grade B, awarded May 2025, or PTE Academic, overall score 72, taken August 2026. Use the exact wording shown on your official result and never round a score upward.
Final Decision Checklist
- I found the test on the recipient’s current official website or received written confirmation.
- I selected the correct test version and delivery mode.
- I know the overall and section score requirements.
- I checked score validity and recency rules.
- I understand how the result must be verified or sent.
- I reviewed the official test format before purchasing preparation materials.
Testing products, score scales, fees, and recognition lists change. Official provider and recipient pages should always take priority over comparison articles when you make a high-stakes decision.
